Obituary for Gloria Langlois

Rev. Gloria Langlois (nee Goruk), wife of Robert, resident of Port Stanley, former dietitian and Presbyterian minister, passed away last Sunday morning in the company of her husband and children. A celebration of her life will be held at St James Presbyterian Church, at the intersection of Yarmouth Centre Road and Ferguson Line in Central Elgin on Saturday, 2017 February 18 at 2:00 pm. Refreshments to follow.

Gloria passed away suddenly on a sleety Sunday morning with her husband Robert by her side. Known for her compassionate and caring nature, she had a strength and determination that was belied by her marvelous smile. Born in Edmonton on October 30, 1945 she grew up with a family oriented independent mother, Jean (nee Nekolaichuk) who instilled in her a strong work ethic, and a younger brother Ken, whom she loved and cherished. Graduating from H.A. Gray in 1960 as Valedictorian and with Honours in Home Economics, she moved to Victoria Comp. H.S. and the University of Alberta where she graduated with a BS.c in Household Economics. While at U of A she was active in both academic and social activities, earning academic awards, being on student council and writing a rousing toast to the graduates at commencement. As an intrepid girl, she accepted an internship at the Montreal General Hospital with three of her friends so that they could be part of the excitement of Expo ‘67. It was there, after accepting an invitation to a youth group at Erskine and American United Church that she met our dad, Robert, and a wonderful 50 year adventure was born. He shared her love of life, with whom she could explore museums, new cities, cultures and cuisines and brought her such happiness. On May 4th, 1968 she married into the Langlois family and embraced her new brother-in-law, David and Sister-in-law, Christine (Unruh). Over the next few years babies followed, Catherine and Elizabeth. Gloria worked as a dietician at the Royal Edward Chest Hospital and Ste Anne’s Veterans Hospital, ultimately becoming Assistant Director of Dietetics at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. The 90’s brought Gloria great personal joy as she left her work in the hospital setting to be a nurturer of another sort. In 1992, with heartfelt support from her family at home and Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Beaconsfield, she graduated from the Presbyterian College of Montreal with a Bachelor of Theology and a Masters in Divinity. In the mid 90’s the adventure continued. Gloria and Robert moved to Southwestern Ontario and Gloria began a new life as the Minister for Belmont Presbyterian Church and St. James Presbyterian Church. New lifelong friends, new beaches to explore, new restaurant menus to peruse and new gardens to grow in Port Stanley brought our mother peace and contentment while she nurtured and mentored her congregation. Over the next 20 years she would welcome three cherished grandchildren, Ben, May and Kate, whom she loved greatly and loved her deeply. Gloria enjoyed seeing her nieces and nephews; Cari, Courtenay, Tara, Christopher, Curtis, Jeff, Jennifer, Richard, Graeme, Angie and Alan find their way in the world. She was so proud and found joy in their happiness. More walks followed over years, all over Canada, Europe, the States, Alaska and Guernsey but they always found a way home to their cozy cottage with its lovely garden and warm fire. With Robert by her side, loving her and holding her hand, she peacefully slipped away. Our Mother was kind. She never judged, or made you feel unwelcome. She listened, she really listened to you. When she offered her thoughts, they were intelligent and thoughtful. Gloria showed us how to thrive, and grow, and learn to be good people. She was an amazing role model who taught us we could be anything, but most of all, that we should love. She was a good mother. We love you.
