And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. -1 Corinthians 13: 4-13 (NIV)
Hayward Broughton accepted Jesus as his savior in his early twenties. From that point on, he knew that Jesus died for his sins and that the only way to eternal life was to put his total trust in Him. He dove into the word, became an ordained minister, and started and supported several ministries including Beacon House Ministries. Participating in Bible Study Fellowship during the last few months of his life, gave him an opportunity to grow even further in his relationship with Christ with like-minded brothers. His Big Faith was apparent to all until his final days. [FAITH]
He never faltered in his hope in the Lord. Throughout the years, he’s seen close family and friends through sickness and hard times. Even as the doctors gave their opinions about his condition, he would remind his family that “Jesus has the final say.” [HOPE]
It was apparent that Christ was his model for how to love. As the Bible reminds us to love sacrificially and put others before ourselves, Hayward did just that with his wife of 45 years, Doretha, and his three children, Gwendolyn Dion (Roderick Sr.) Hargrove, Hayward Cornelius and Joi-Anna Broughton.
He leaves behind: his mother, Doris E Broughton; one sister, Betty Jean (Darthus) Ellison; and two brothers, Kenneth Earl (Carolyn) Broughton, Gregory Steve (Doretta) Broughton; three grandchildren, Tatiana De’nae, Roderick Jr. & Adrianna Tre’nyce Hargrove; four nieces, Pamela (Clent) Walker, Symora Bufford-Whitaker, Karen Alisha & Natasha Frene Broughton; three nephews, Phillip G., Randall K. Broughton and Joshua Walker. He was preceded in death by his father, Jessie E. Broughton, and brother, Larry E. Broughton. Hayward has a host of family and friends who would all agree that, if you knew him, you recognized his genuine love for Christ and his genuine love for people. [LOVE]
During his final moments on this earth, the last song that he listened to was “In The Arms of Jesus.” His faith, hope, and love give us comfort that he is now safe in Jesus’ arms and that we will see him again.
