Effie Jane Kindred, known to most people in her younger years as “Dot” and later as “Miss Effie”, was born November 10, 1908 in Cecil, Alabama. She attended Jones Chapel Elementary School and resided in Bullock County her entire life. For the past 11 years she had been a resident of Southern Springs nursing home, where she reluctantly moved to at the age of 99, still insisting she could “Take care of myself”.
Putting the year 1908 in perspective, if you know anything about politics, like old western movies, use perfume or like football, you have probably heard these names: Lyndon Johnson, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jimmy Stewart, Betty Davis, Ethel Merman, Nelson Rockefeller, Joseph McCarthy, Joan Crawford, Estee Lauder, Ian Fleming and Paul Brown, were all born the same year as Miss Effie. That is the year the first production Ford Model T was built. The first year the ball signifying the new year was dropped in Times Square not only signifying the start of a new year but the year that would give life to a phenomenal person.
She remembered the major wars because she lived them. She had a brother-in-law that served in WWI, a brother in WWII, a nephew in the Korean war and a son who served in Vietnam.
Effie accepted Christ in her life at an early age and joined Mountain View Baptist Church. Of course she had to abandon Mountain View after falling in love and marrying into a family of African Methodist Episcopalians, to a guy named Charlie D. (Dan) Kindred, her husband for over 60 years. At this time she joined his family church - Jones Chapel AME Zion Church where she served for many years as a Missionary, Class leader, Sunday School Teacher, and on the Usher Board.
She is the proud mother of 7 children. Losing one of her twin boys at age five due to complications from measles and her eldest son James in December 2000. She is survived by 5 children and their spouses; Ruby, Effie, William (Brenda) Sam (Shirley), Susie and James lovely wife Dorothy also called Dot, and one God-Daughter - Australia A. Tolliver.
She celebrated her 110th birthday this past November 10, and, went to join her soul mate Dan on April 10, 2019. She fought the good fight but her body just wore out.
The Staff of Carter Funeral Home is honored to support the Kindred family with End of Life Services.
